Protect Nantucket’s Future
Nantucket’s eastern shoreline is slipping away. With every storm and season, erosion edges closer to homes, Baxter Road, and the iconic Sankaty Lighthouse. The threat is real, and the time to act is now.
Over the past decade, residents, the Sconset Beach Preservation Fund, and the Town have worked together to develop and implement a science-backed coastal resiliency plan to protect the bluff, the historic neighborhood it borders, public access to Sankaty Light, and vital infrastructure. While this issue has faced challenges and debate in the past, the current plan reflects renewed collaboration, local oversight, and a shared commitment to move forward together.
Following extensive public review, the Conservation Commission approved a plan to expand the existing system. This expansion represents a meaningful next step in protecting one of the island’s most vulnerable coastal areas.
Supporting this project means advancing a targeted, long-term strategy to manage erosion and preserve the integrity of the coastline. It means protecting generations of Nantucket residents, safeguarding the island’s history, and ensuring the future of our local economy and environment.
